The Mighty Miramichi River

New Brunswick government announced on July 3rd that New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Newfoundland & Labrador, and Nova Scotia can ”bubble” together and travel from province to province without quarantining. We didn’t leave the province though, we chose to stay in New Brunswick, and explore more of our beautiful province. We just got back from Miramichi, and it is known as the Irish capital of Canada. This is because there were so many Irish that settled in Miramichi between 1815-1850. The Mighty Miramichi River is popular among avid fisherman and for the salmon run. A few U.S. Presidents, Hollywood celebrities, and Ted Williams, famous baseball player of Boston Red Sox, even came to fish for wild salmon.

We stayed at the Rodd Resort for two nights. The Rodd Resort is located on the Miramichi River, and there’s a beautiful view of the sunset at night. We also saw lots of people on their boats and jet skis enjoying the Canadian summer. At every hotel we go to, there has to be a swimming pool. I love to swim. I just finished the Red Cross’ Level 10 swim lesson. Next year, I will train to be an Assistant Lifeguard. My whole family loves to swim, and this pool was very warm. I’m talking about nice and relaxing hot tub warm. It’s really nice to swim at night, because you can watch the sun set on the Mighty Miramichi River. There’s also a walking trail beside the Rodd Resort which is nice because you can enjoy the view of the river.

The Rodd Resort has a restaurant called 1809. At first I thought 1809 was a year that something special happened, like maybe that was when the resort was built or something. We asked our waiter, and she said that 1809 was just the street address of Rodd Resort. Anyway, The food was really good and I got a nice thick cheeseburger and a side of vegetables fries. My parents ordered a Maritime favorite, fish and chips. You should try it if you ever visit Atlantic Canada.

On the first day, we went tubing at Miramichi River. We went with Gallan’s Miramichi River Tubing. It was really fun! You can chose either the five hour run, or the two hour run. We chose the two hour run, and we had lots of fun! The water was really warm and the weather was perfect. It was 38 degrees Celcius (95F), and floating down the river was peaceful and relaxing. We also went to the Ritchie Wharf to take a boat tour on the Miracmichi River, but due to COVID-19 it was not open to the public.

We also paid a visit to St. Michael’s Basilica and it was beautiful inside. There was lots of colorful stained glass windows, and according to the gentleman that gave us a tour, some of the windows are insured for eight hundred thousand dollars. Wow! The church also has some colorful candles to light. My dad gave me five dollars for me to light one of the candles. I chose a teal candle to light, and the man who was giving us a tour searched for a lighter that worked. I like to light candles at different churches I visited, like the Notre-Dame in Paris or St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. My dad must like to light the candle as well because at every Catholic Church we go to, we light a candle. At some churches when I was younger I’ve ”accidentally” blew out one or two of the candles.

If you ever visit the east coast of Canada, make sure to stop in Miramichi. I definitely recommend staying at the Rodd Resort, it’s a hotel with a beautiful view. After our stay at the hotel, we took a road trip at the Acadian Peninsula. I will tell you more about it on my next post. Stay safe!

Hotel stay is complimentary by Rodd Resort.

  1. We stayed at this hotel for one of Brooke’s basketball tournaments a few years ago. It was a great hotel. Unfortunately it was in March, so we didn’t get to enjoy any of the local attractions. Hopefully we will get a chance to go back. 😊

  2. wow another great tour. You are so lucky to have these wonderful places nearby in New Brunswick. I have never been to that area … keep it up.

  3. Excellent post Miss A! Thank you for sharing your experiences and providing so many interesting tidbits and facts on the locations that you visit.
