Aloha!!! This is going to continue from where I left off last time. We flew to Hawaii from the Saint John Airport in New Brunswick, and it was a very long flight. The airport is only twenty minutes away from our house, which is quite handy. Once, my dad mistakenly took my Philippine passport instead of my mom’s passport. It wasn’t a good thing. I have two passports, a Canadian and a Philippine passport. He immediately called the car service that dropped us off and he was flying back to our house to switch passports. My mom and I waited at the airport, and this was at 5:30 a.m. He got back just in time. It was a really close call, and this is why it’s so important to check your things ahead of time.
Anyway, if you’re flying from the East Coast, prepare for jet lag. Once you get there though its great, you can kick off your shoes and relax on the nearest sandy beach. We went to so many beaches, Paki Bay Beach Park, Pupukea Beach, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Beach. They are all beautiful beaches, and some of them have bigger waves than the others. I really like waves because you can have all kinds of fun, you can surf, boogie board, and body surf. In Maui, we went to a beach and the waves were MASSIVE. I’d say they were maybe fifteen feet tall. When we first got to the beach, I got right in, then I almost drowned. Those. Waves. Were. Huge.
There are also a lot of Filipinos in Hawaii because in 1906, Filipinos were hired to work in the sugar mills. My mom is Filipino, and seeing lots of Filipinos made her feel at home. Another thing is, because there are so many Filipinos, Jollibee, which is a popular fast food chain in the Philippines opened up a branch in Hawaii. My mom always talks about Jollibee so to finally eat there was great. I like Chickenjoy and the Cheesy Yum Burger! Hawaii has lots of foods trucks. We ate at Giovanni’s, and it’s famous for buttered shrimp. I really like shrimp! It was really good and very buttery served with white rice. When you visit Hawaii, make sure to go to a Lu’au. It is a traditional Hawaiian feast. They served lots of food and the main dish is roasted pig which was roasted underground.
I also learned the Hawaiin greeting called a Shaka, or sometimes known as “hanging loose“, it’s done by extending the thumb and smallest finger while holding the three middle fingers curled, and gesturing salutation while presenting the front or back of the hand. Try it, and when you get to Hawaii you already know how’s it done.
I’ve been to Hawaii twice. We took a NCL Pride of America cruise to visit the other islands. I will post about that in the future and I will tell you what my favorite island is. Is it Oahu, Maui, Kauai, or Hawai’i? (Also called the Big Island)
