Book Matchmaker

Hello! I am back with another post for you all :]

I realize that my taste in book might not be for everyone all of the time, so with this post, I am hoping to cater more to a broader audience, I suppose. Taking books that I may or may not have liked, and still finding a show, movie, or other piece of media that I think is related to that. Hopefully you can find something you’ve already loved, and see which Atlantic Canadian book “matches” with it!

I matched these books moreso based on the intended audience for each, rather than similarities in story and what they’re about. Of course there’s some of that still in there, but the intended audience part comes through a bit stronger.

First up is Swan by Sidura Ludwig matched with the movie, Wonder. I paired these 2 together because they both share a similar story of children who have to grow up different from the rest. Wonder is a movie that I believe I first saw in theatres, and Swan really reminded me about this movie in particular. Anna Swan and Auggie both have a lot in common, the main thing is that they are physically different from the other kids. While Anna Swan is tall and doesn’t seem to stop growing, Auggie is deformed and just a bit nerdy as well. Both feel like outcasts, and get bullied by the other children. They’re both stories of how these children come to terms with the way they are, and stop trying to change things. Both are really touching stories! I would really recommend Swan to just about anyone :]

The Goodbye Girls and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. If you’ve liked TATB, you would likely enjoy TGG. TGG is your typical high school romance novel, it’s got messy romances and breakups if that’s the kind of thing you’re into. Given the chance between TATB and TGG I would pick TATB, to be honest with you. In terms of enjoyment, I found it more enjoyable and satisfying. I think TGG is good if you’re a fan of high school romance movies just like TATB, a good time, an easy read, and fun drama to get invested in.

Kira’s Secret and H2O Just Add Water! Kira’s secret is not only a fun read, but it’s actually very perfect for fans of H2O. They both have fantasy elements of mermaids and sea creatures, but Kira’s secret is a more grounded, coming of age adventure story overall. Kira’s Secret follows a more traditional “hero’s journey” type story, while H2O is a tv show so it’s slightly more episodic but still good. These two are a really good match!

Shoot Me and Knives Out. Knives Out is the movie I was constantly thinking of throughout reading Shoot Me. Though I didn’t personally like Shoot Me, I still think it matches Knives Out quite well. If you liked Knives Out, you can expect a decent drama and partially mystery novel from Shoot Me. Murder, drama, romance, lying, if that’s your kind of thing, then you would likely enjoy Shoot Me.

Skyward and Divergent! Wow it’s been a while since I watched or read Divergent, but out of the popular dystopian YA books, I think it’s safe to say that Divergent is more alike Skyward than a different dystopia. I won’t spoil anything for either of these books in case you haven’t read them, but if you have read Divergent then you know exactly the kind of vibe I’m talking about. Skyward is definitely more grounded, it has more themes of family and community. It’s a sweeter book and overall story than Divergent, and it has a bit of a happier ending (If you know what I mean…) I think fans of Divergent, dystopian novels, and just the other YA dystopian books in general, will like Skyward and it’s story as well.
