Boxing Day!

Did you know that after Christmas Canadians celebrate another holiday? It is called Boxing Day. It was traditionally a day off for servants, and the day when they received a special Christmas box from their masters. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas boxes to their families. 🎁 There are other countries that celebrate Boxing Day, they are the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, South Africa, and Nigeria. This holiday started in England and these countries used to be British colonies.

The day also has religious connections and is celebrated as Saint Stephen’s Day in Ireland and the Catalonia region of Spain. In some countries like Hungary, Germany, Poland, and Netherlands – Boxing Day is celebrated as a second Christmas Day.

Today Canadians celebrate Boxing Day as shopping day. Many stores have sales after Christmas. (UNDENIABLY the BEST day to spend Christmas money!) πŸ˜‰ The money I received this year will be probably go to my bank account for safe keeping. If Boxing Day falls on a weekday, the banks and government offices will also be closed. So it’s another day to spend time with the family!

In your country, do you have an extra day to celebrate Christmas!

    1. I remember seeing a Sri Lankan calendar that showed the dates for all Hindu, Christian, Muslim & Buddhist religious holiday and festival days. Is that the same in India also?

  2. I’m really glad to be back in a country that celebrates Boxing Day. I remember my first year back in the US and it was a culture shock moment to realize it’s not a thing there. I even mentioned Boxing Day to someone and they were like, “Huh?” I had to get into the habit or saying December 26th there instead, but now I’m happy to say Boxing Day!

  3. Thank you for reminding me of the origin of the holiday. I knew it but forgot.
