Highway Thru Hell

The title might me a little bit crude, but that’s the real title of a Reality TV Show filmed in British Columbia, Canada. It’s about the Coquihalla Highway built in 1986. It is part of Highway 5. It goes from Hope, north to Kamloops via Merritt. It’s one of the the worst road in North America in winter time. The Coquihalla Pass’ elevation is 1,244 meter (4,081 ft).

In the winter time its dangerous to travel on the Coq (short for Coquihalla) because the roads get slippery, and lots of accidents happen. There are also a lot of avalanches. A 300 meter snow shed is built on the corridor to make the highway safe and make travel uninterrupted during a heavy snowfall. During our drive we could see the avalanche chutes scar the mountainsides. You can tell that the terrain is steep. You probably asked, “why on Earth would you take the road if its sooo dangerous?” On a good day it saves you more than an hour drive between Kamloops and Hope and it connects to the Okanagan where we are staying. On a bad day which I saw on T.V., motorist was stuck there for three days. That’s so long! So my dad checked the road conditions first, and weighed the pros and cons.

If you plan to drive here in October to March, you must carry a chain for your tires, or your tires should be M+S (Mud and Snow). One of my sponsors for my Coast to Coast Canada Adventure is a local Subaru dealership, Aberdeen Subaru. For the trip across Canada they gave us new set of M+S tires, and other things. They really looked after us. The first time we drove on the Coq was in September years ago so the road condition wasn’t bad. This time it’s not bad yet because it’s not the peak of winter. From Okanagan we decided to visit Vancouver for a few days, and do some Christmas shopping. I’ll tell you more about my visit in Vancouver on another post. Vancouver is one of the largest city in Canada.

Discovery Channel films the work of tow truck operators helping drivers who got stuck in the ditch, or hauling away 18-wheeler trucks and vehicles that were involved in an accident that’s blocking the road. Many accidents happen during winter time. These tow truck operators brave the elements to get the job done! They also retrieved vehicles that fall in the deep ravine. It is very important to keep the highway open to transport goods to the town and cities so I salute these men. I posted the video below of our drive on the Coq.

I have a YouTube Channel that you can subscribe to see videos of my travels.

  1. Great snap shot on some cool history. Well chosen photo too. You definitely have some journalistic skills and you should keep on writing. Fabulous report on the Canadian BC scene.

  2. Wow! I have heard a lot about treacherous roads, but I haven’t heard of that particular road before. I used to watch the show Ice Road Truckers, which talked a lot about the Dalton highway in Alaska

  3. Looks beautiful!!😊❤️ There are a lot of places I want to visit but I don’t know why I don’t visit them?? But anyways this will be in my list….
