My First Caribbean Cruise

This post is going to be about my first cruise on the NCL Sky (Norwegian Cruise Line) in October 2012. It was a seven day cruise to the Caribbean. I was only four year old so I don’t remember much, but my mom took lots of pictures for me to look back at. My mom always prints our pictures and puts them in a photo album. Because we live in Florida for half of the year, we are very close to Cape Canaveral, one of the many cruise terminals in Florida. We live very close to the cruise terminal only forty-five minutes away from Orlando.

Our first stop was Cozumel, Mexico where I tried on lots of colorful hats called “sombreros” and we walked around and went shopping. I can’t remember much but one thing I do remember though, is that it was very hot and I just wanted to head back to the cruise and swim in the pool. My Dad said that there’s a lot of beautiful beaches in Cozumel and good spots for snorkeling, but we didn’t go because I was still too young for that.

Next day, we started for Grand Cayman Islands, and there we visited a place called Hell, it has its own post office where you can mail postcards from “Hell”. There’s no concrete facts how the place got its name, but the name stuck. I read an information sign that said:

HELL CAYMAN ISLANDS – The sharp gray rock colored pinnacled surface of Cayman Formation dolostone referred to as phytokarst, is the result of solution of the rock by carbonate-loving organisms. This erosion has left an eerie and desolate looking landscape that earned this location its highly appropriate name.

From there we visited a turtle farm and I got to hold a turtle the size of my head. My mom held a turtle too and so did my dad, but the turtle my mom was holding looked like it was about to fly away or something because it kept flapping its flippers like, ”You must let go of meeeee!!!,”

Then we walked around the town to visit the shopping malls. The port where the cruises dock is usually close to a shopping mall where locals sell souvenirs for tourists to bring home. Another place we went to, was Kirk Freeport, which is a line of shops. Since my Dad’s name is Kirk, he kept teasing me that he owned all of Kirk Freeport! (Because he’s just so crazy!) We also went to Seven Mile Beach, one of the famous beaches in Cayman Island, but we didn’t swim and decided to go back to the ship instead.

After that, we hopped back to the boat and set off to Ochos Rios, Jamaica. Our first stop there was a waterfall (picture at the top) with a very slippery and rocky slope called Dunn’s River Falls, and there were lots of people swimming where the falls ended. I was too small to swim in the fast flowing falls so we didn’t go in. We took a taxi to visit the nearest town and then we ate at Burger King for lunch. My Dad is not an adventurous eater. He wanted to eat at a familiar place because he didn’t want us to get sick while we were on the trip. After that we headed back to the cruise to swim. The cruise has two pools and four hot tubs. I enjoy swimming a lot!

The next morning we woke up, the cruise was docked in the middle of the ocean. We were tender docked, that means we had to take a smaller boat to go to the island. We went to Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island, it is one of the many island in Bahamas. We relaxed on the white sandy beach with lots of tiny fish swimming in the crystal clear ocean. The cruise dining staff prepared a BBQ feast for everyone. It was a really fun experience. There’s always a lot of food on a cruise. I liked the desserts especially. Looking back at the pictures, I was so tan. I got a lot of sun for sure!

We boarded the cruise for the last time and there was a sea day before we could finally be home. I really like sea days, sea day means that we are not stopping at any ports, we’re at sea all day. On sea day you can do all kinds of fun things on the ship like, eat as much as you want in the buffet, swim in the pool, get unlimited ice cream, go on the water slide, and so much more! My most favorite is going to the Kids Club because we do a lot of activities and crafts, we even decorated cupcakes one day. I think it’s my parents favorite too because when I’m at the kids club they can have time for themselves. Some cruises even have a roller coaster! Stay tuned for more adventures!
